Port of Trieste, decrease in traffic but signs of recovery in the first 10 months of 2020
TRIESTE – Despite a general decrease (-12%) in the tons handled, the Port of Trieste is showing signs of recovery opposing the contraction of worldwide business caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ro-ro traffic has grown by 3% in the first ten months of 2020, with 195,000 units moved. Container traffic has been substantially stable, -2% and 638,000 teus moved. In line with a scenario that is to be observed in all ports, the over 45 million tons of goods moved in the first ten months of 2020 represent a -12% decrease, that can be ascribed to the drop by 71% in the traffic of crude oil and solid bulk, caused mainly by the shut down of the steel plant of Servola in Trieste; the termination of the plant activities is, in turn, at the origin of the -20% in the number of trains which crossed the port gates between January and October: 6,680 in total.
