Largest container vessel in the Adriatic Sea docks in Trieste harbour
TRIESTE - The “2M” alliance between Maersk Line and MSC marks the official start of Far East line in Trieste with the arrival of GERDA MAERSK, the 10,000 teu megaship. Built in 2009, the 367 metres long and 43 metres wide vessel arrived last night at Molo VII (Pier VII).
Tomorrow at 11 a.m., the local authorities, guests of the Captain, will celebrate on the vessel the first stopover of Gerda Maersk and the start of the new service. In addition, yesterday XIN QIN HUANG DAO arrived at Molo VII, too, the first Cma-Cgm container vessel of the “Ocean three” alliance between Cma Cgm, Uasc and China Shipping. The Port of Trieste, in fact, is one among the very few ports in Italy that has been chosen to receive the vessels of the new alliances. It is an important sign confirming the traffic growth and the interest of the main international shipping companies for the Adriatic Sea and its ports, in particular for the Port of Trieste, thanks to its strategic geographical position compared with the markets of Southern and Eastern Europe, to its intermodal links by road and sea, to its natural draft of 18 meters and to the port infrastructure of the container terminal, which is already able to berth and handle contemporaneously two big transoceanic ships.
