TRIESTE – Container traffic handled by Trieste Marine Terminal grew by 38.95% in the first quarter of 2025.
Nearly 206,000 TEUs were moved from January to the end of March at Molo VII, the terminal operated by MSC’s subsidiary. March also set an all-time record (surpassing January), with 75,730 TEUs handled – the highest figure since the terminal began operations. To get the full picture for the port of Trieste, container volumes moved via Ro-Ro services should also be included, which would further boost this record.

Despite the strong start to the year (partially expected after the challenges of Q1 2024), it remains difficult to forecast what the coming months will bring. For TMT, much will depend on the impact of the termination of the 2M alliance between MSC and Maersk, in light of the new partnership between the Danish carrier and Hapag-Lloyd through the Gemini service. However, this new service does not directly involve Trieste, focusing instead on Koper and Rijeka. Venice and the port of Friuli Venezia Giulia are currently served by feeder vessels departing from Port Said.

What remains to be seen – starting with data from the coming weeks – is whether TMT will be able to recover volumes from alternative sources, and how significantly the loss of Maersk’s transshipment activity will weigh, as the carrier is currently calling at the logistics platform managed by HHLA Plt Italy.
