The Port of Trieste increase number of trains, traffic of general goods and containers

TRIESTE – The Port of Trieste continues the positive performance with more than 2000 trains handled during the first trimester of 2017, leading to an increase of 20.06% compared to the same period of the last year.

Positive figures come also from the main categories of goods, confirming the already well-established growth of some trades; the most important increase is recorded in the container sector where 137.220 teus have been moved in the first trimester of 2017, leading to an increase of 14.02%. It is very important to mention also general goods sector, where an increase of 5.75% is recorded, and RO-RO sector that registered an increase of 2.21% with 74.358 units that have been handled. On the other hand, however, due to scheduled maintenance at the Siot oil terminal, the total amount of handled goods decreased by 2.10%, given the fact there was a decline in liquid bulk.
The president of the Port Authority, Zeno D’Agostino, declared: «In 2017 the container sector has brought many satisfactions for the Port of Trieste, which is driven by the increase of new intercontinental maritime lines and by the new international intermodal services that connect the Port of Trieste with Eastern Europe, Germany and Austria. We have entered in a virtuous circle that has started to bear fruit. Figures coming from the main sectors are very positive. Moreover, we expect further trade increases in the coming months, given the dynamics that have taken place in the last period between our terminal operators and the main shipping companies».
