The Port of Trieste exceeds half a million teus in container traffic

TRIESTE - 2014 has been a record year for Trieste Marine Terminal, overseeing 476,507 teus moved, an increase of 3.93 percent over 2013, with 458,497 teus moved. The positive trend is thus going on and this represents a new record for annual container traffic in Trieste, awaiting the news concerning the alliances Ocean Three (CMA CGM-UASC-China Shipping) and 2M (Maersk-MSC having 10,000 teu ships). The new services calling at Trieste will offer a wider range of faster traffic solutions to Italian and foreign customers, in particular from and to Far East. In addition, the present service handled by Evergreen (jointly with Hanjin, Yang Ming, MOL, China Shipping) will be increased from a capacity of 6,500 teus to 8,500 teus.
All this paves the way to new remarkable growth opportunities, both at a national level and for the traditional markets of reference, such as the Austrian and Bavarian ones. New opportunities will arise also for Eastern Europe (Hungary, Czech republic, Slovakia, Southern Poland) via Trieste, above all thanks to the wide intermodal network which is further expanding. TMT’s results involve the whole Port of Trieste, which set a new record for this kind of commodity. With its 506,007 teus (+10.34% on 2013), in fact, the port of call of Friuli Venezia Giulia reached its target of exceeding 500,000 teus moved in 2014 and keeps growing in this important sector for the fourth year in a row. After the starting point of 281,643 teus in 2010, the container traffic in the Port of Trieste has continually increased until now, thus recording a total increase of 80% in the last four years.
