TRIESTE – From the sea to Europe’s main distribution hubs: the new weekly rail service between the port of Gioia Tauro and Verona (RFI’s Terminali Italia at the Quadrante Europa freight village) has officially started.
Operated by Medlog, MSC’s logistics division, the service is designed to provide a fast and efficient solution for the transport of refrigerated goods. With this move, MSC aims to strengthen its intermodal logistics network, supporting the needs of the Italian agri-food market—particularly the transport of perishable goods such as fruit and vegetables.

Temperature-controlled containers will be shipped inland swiftly, reducing transit times and avoiding transshipments. This service is specifically tailored to Italy’s agri-food exports, which in 2024 moved nearly 340,000 refrigerated containers (source: Container Trades Statistics Ltd). The service will run weekly and cover the Gioia Tauro–Verona route in just 24 hours, offering a rail connection directly integrated with MSC’s global maritime network.

The direct rail access from the Gioia Tauro terminal avoids road congestion, ensures cold chain integrity by eliminating transshipments, and provides one of the fastest transit times to European distribution hubs.
