TRIESTE – The Austrian Ministry of Transport has introduced new traffic bans for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes.

These restrictions add to the existing nighttime bans, the specific limitations along the Brenner axis (A12 and A13), those related to the works on the Lueg Bridge and the Tauern motorway (A10), as well as the weekend bans (from 3:00 p.m. on Saturday to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday).

The existing exemptions remain valid for the transport of slaughter animals, periodical press distribution, beverage supply in tourist areas, refuelling of petrol stations, medicines, solid urban waste, catering supplies, refrigeration equipment repairs, and combined transport operations to or from the nearest rail terminal, with the appropriate railway consignment note.

The routes and upcoming dates affected are:

  • A12 (Inntalautobahn) and A13 (Brenner motorway) for vehicles heading to or transiting through Italy:

    June 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.;

  • A4 (Ostautobahn) from the Schwechat junction (Vienna airport area) to the border with Hungary (Nickelsdorf), except for transport operations loading or unloading in the districts of Neusiedl am See, Eisenstadt, Eisenstadt-Umgebung, Rust, Mattersburg, Bruck an der Leitha, Gänserndorf, and Korneuburg:

    every Saturday from June 28 to August 30, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.;

  • Roads B178 (Loferer – from Lofer to Wörgl), B320 (Ennstal – from km 4.5), B177 (Seefelder – entire route), B179 (Fernpass – from Nassereith to Biberwier), B181 (Achensee – entire route), and B182 (Brenner – entire route) in both directions:

    every Saturday from July 5 to August 30, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The 2025 calendar of traffic restrictions related to the Lueg Bridge maintenance works — which will also impact heavy traffic at the Brenner crossing — is available on the website of the Austrian motorway management company, Asfinag. Real-time information on travel times, forecasts, congestion trends, and webcam images is also available there, in German, English, and Italian.

The planning foresees two-lane traffic on days of heavy traffic flows. A total of 180 days are planned during which traffic will be channeled over the Lueg Bridge on two lanes, both southbound and northbound.
