TRIESTE – Another meeting was held in recent days to seek a solution to the stop of engine production at the Wartsila plant in Trieste.

At the headquarters of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the CEO of Wartsila Italia, Michele Cafagna, basically confirmed the industrial project already presented to the Ministry of Enterprise, with some changes.
During the meeting, Wartsila management informed the parties about its willingness to maintain future activity at the Bagnoli della Rosandra plant, and to quantify the warehouses and parts of the site subject to possible sale as part of the reindustrialization project at between 39 and 45 million euros.
In addition to the 50 million eruo of planned investments in Trieste over the next three years, there is also 1.4 million for test instrumentation for methanol conversion of engines (W46C and ZA40).
Proposals that did not dispel the doubts of the trade unions, which called for the convening of a regional table to address the employment issue of the 300 or so workers working in the ancillary business. The Friuli Venezia Giulia region has pledged to do so.
As of September 1, there were 941 Wartsila employees on the payroll at the Bagnoli della Rosandra plant, of whom 320 are, for the company, potential redundancies to be relocated.
“Concerns still remain about the prospects of Wärtsilä Italia: there is a lack of a plan for the development of a core/industrial activity that could be of strategic importance for the entire Wärtsilä group as was the production of engines taken over in 2001,” the unions write in a note. Strong perplexities also in meirto the fact that “the retrofit activity” could become strategic for Wartsila Italy, considering the limited resources used in the industrialization process of the activity.
Finally, the company “has not yet activated actions for the sustainability of the seaport of Trieste, necessary for the docking of vessels for green engine retrofit operations,” the union note concludes.

TRIESTE – Wärtsilä to launch ground-breaking 2-stroke future fuels conversion solution and joins forces with MSC for technology demonstration.
The development programme – named Two-Stroke Future Fuels Conversion Platform – has recently been concluded with successful initial engine tests in the Wärtsilä two-stroke engine laboratory in Trieste. MSC Shipmanagement has collaborated with Wärtsilä throughout the development as a key partner in the piloting and advancement of the platform towards future fuel applications. Representatives from MSC were in attendance during some of the testing procedures.
The technology group Wärtsilä will commercially launch its Two-Stroke Future Fuels Conversion platform during the first quarter of 2022. This innovative and patented engine combustion technology platform will enable two-stroke main engines’ fast and cost-effective conversion to operate on clean-burning future fuels. This is seen as a major step in the maritime industry’s efforts to achieve decarbonised shipping operations. At the same time, the retrofitting will avoid owners having to face long off-hire charter time.
The retrofit conversion will initially enable operation with currently available LNG fuel. The modular design of this concept provides a platform that will be further developed to adopt alternative green fuels or fuel blends when they become commercially available.
The conversion solution is aimed at vessels operating with a two-stroke, electronically controlled engines. The first commercial conversion project will be completed by mid-2023.
“Wärtsilä has taken a leading position in the development and delivery of smart technology solutions that will accelerate the realisation of our industry’s decarbonisation ambitions. This pioneering conversion solution is one more prime example of our capabilities and commitment. Its flexibility means that the first step towards adopting future fuels can be taken now, knowing that the investment will not become obsolete. The benefits, both economic and environmental, are significant,” says Roger Holm, President Marine Power & EVP Wärtsilä Corporation.
“We have been following the development of this innovative conversion solution with high interest, and we regard it as a supporting element in MSC’s journey towards net-zero decarbonisation by 2050. Together with Wärtsilä we have high expectations for the next steps of this initiative, which starts with technology demonstration on one of our larger container vessels with a Wärtsilä RT-flex96C-B main engine, and which will continue to make our existing fleet ready to meet future emissions needs,” says Prabhat Jha, CEO & Group Managing Director MSC Shipmanagement.

MONFALCONE – A 90-tonne reactor headed for Spain was loaded today at the port of Monfalcone.
The loading operations were carried out by Compagnia portuale di Monfalcone, recently passed into the orbit of FHP (F2i Holding Portuale).
The lifting of the equipment took place with two cranes in tandem, following the arrival at the quay on October 2 of the new Liebherr with a capacity of 144 tons. With the arrival of the second crane, CPM has now at its disposal a twin lift capacity of 288 tons, which confirms the will to keep the Friuli Venezia Giulia port of call as a reference point for project cargo.
The cargo was handled by the shipping agent Ferest Shipping, as already happened last October 20, when, with destination USA, about 50 thousand cubic meters of equipment in boxes were loaded.
It’s news of a few days, instead, the possible “recovery” of Spliethoff with a regular line, after the vicissitudes that had seen the Dutch company leaving Monfalcone for Porto Marghera.

TRIESTE – Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) recorded a strong performance in the first nine months of the year. Traffics and employees growth for HHLA PLT Italy.
Overall, the HHLA Group’s revenue rose by 12.4% to 1,078.9 million euros in the reporting period (previous year: 959.9 million euros).
A temporary spike in storage fees due to longer container dwell times at HHLA’s terminals in Hamburg had a particularly positive effect. This was caused by the ongoing disruptions to global supply chains. In addition, HHLA benefited from strong growth in container transport volumes. Against this backdrop, the Group operating result (EBIT) rose by 51.3% year-on-year to 162.1 million euros.
Slight 1.6% rise in container throughput to 5,165 thousand TEU, always considering the first nine months o 2021.
«The ongoing, at times massive, ship delays are posing major challenges to our operations. Nevertheless, we are aware of our responsibility as a service provider for Germany as an industrialised nation. We are therefore working 24/7 at our facilities, with both equipment and personnel operating at high capacity, to ensure that companies and consumers receive their goods despite all the disruptions to global production and supply chains. We are operating on the basis that the difficulties will continue into 2022. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and weather-related effects, it is not possible to provide a precise forecast as to when supply chains will return to normal.» said Angela Titzrath, Chairwoman of HHLA’s Executive Board.
Only RoRo ships – and no container ships – were handled at the newest terminal in the HHLA network in Trieste during the first nine months of 2021. So that’s the reason why no figures were given from Hamburg for the subsidiary in Trieste, HHLA PLT Italy.
The company at the port of Trieste started commercial operation in March 2021, while the first commercial train was operated in July 2021. Ro-Ro services started the first weekly service in March, followed by a second weekly service from Cesme (Turkey) in September. The RoRo units handled in Q3 increased by 45.37% compared to Q2.
Concerning general cargo, timber, aluminium, and coils are the main commodities handled. An increase in general cargo vessel unloading volumes was set in Q2 ( 4.976 tons) vs Q3 (155.575 tons).
HHLA PLT Italy currently employees 76 people, recording an increase of 22% in Q3 compared to Q2.

TRIESTE – A delegation of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission has today met in Trieste the President of the Port Authority, Zeno D’Agostino.
The meeting took place during the Commission’s visit to Friuli Venezia Giulia. The analysis allowed the parliamentarians to exclude serious infiltration by organized crime in the region while emphasizing its presence and the need to keep a very high attentiveness to the phenomenon.
The reference, in particular, was made to the port of Trieste, which is waiting for substantial public funding (416.5 million euros only from the Complementary Fund) and potential private investments.
Senator Marco Pellegrini (M5S), who chairs the Anti-Mafia Commission, explained that he had asked President D’Agostino for a memo on the organization of the International Free Port of Trieste, which was considered very interesting and therefore potentially “exportable” to other ports of call on the national territory, especially in the field of IT control tools. The Commissioners were very impressed by the competence of Mr D’Agostino and underlined how the port of Trieste is very important also in the future perspective.
«From all the hearings carried out, we have ascertained that there is no rooting, no structuring of the mafias in Friuli Venezia Giulia, but there are signs of very high risks of infiltration and therefore attentiveness must be high also because here will come a lot of money for the Pnrr, from 1.2 billion to, perhaps, even 2 billion, a mass of money with which many investments are planned that will be tempting for organized crime. And for this, we need a contrast action implemented in the best way,» said Senator Pellegrini.
«In Fvg – has added the deputy Nicola Pellicani (Pd) – there are some exponents of families of Cosa Nostra, as of the family of camorrists of Licciardi». “Maximum attentiveness” was also indicated for Fincantieri.
The police are already paying attention to the territory, with a general of the Guardia di Finanza and Carabinieri officers coming from investigative experiences in Sicily.

The general cargo ship Floragracht left the port this afternoon after loading – with an almost record production – 4000 tons of steel bars, bound for Gibraltar. After the controversy of the past months regarding the allegedly impossible coexistence between “white ships” and commercial traffic, the Dutch company had decided to abandon the line with the American continent, now considered historical for the port of Monfalcone.
In reality, contacts between Compagnia Portuale (a subsidiary of F2i Holding Portuale together with MarterNeri) and Spliethoff have never ceased. In agreement with the Municipality, the Port Authority is proceeding to find a solution to integrate the two types of traffic. Also, the forthcoming assignment of the new concessions should Spliethoff call Portorosega again.

TRIESTE – The Board of Directors of Fincantieri examined and approved the interim financial information as of September 30, 2021. Revenues are up by over 28% (4.53 billion euros). Ebitda is up 65% (330 million), while total workload amounts to 36 billion euros (almost seven times 2020 revenues), with 2.3 billion orders acquired in the period under review. Excellent analysis of the outlook.
«The Group’s growth guaranteed by the existing workload continues, the result of our policy of maintaining orders even during the crisis period induced by the pandemic. We have achieved one of the highest margins in the sector, which, together with volumes, we aim to increase further, also thanks to the substantial investments we are making in all our sites. Our design and organizational skills are among the best in the world, and our sites are at the forefront in terms of construction capacity and the high levels of quality achieved,» commented the CEO, Giuseppe Bono.
The first nine months of 2021, says Fincantieri, were still characterized by applying strict health protocols to combat health emergencies. The company has also started the vaccination campaign for the suppliers’ workforce, activating dedicated points in all its Italian yards. Starting on October 15, it has restricted access to Italian sites only to workers in compliance with the provisions of Decree-Law No. 127 on September 21, 2021. To date, these effects are not expected to significantly impact the production of the shipyards and production sites in Italy.
About the cruise sector, the significant recovery of activities continues with 206 ships in service (equal to 57% of the world fleet) by 65 cruise operators (data referred to the month of October), with the prospect, based on the communications of the leading shipowners, of further increasing the share of ships in service up to 70%-80% by the end of the year.
Fincantieri expects in the short-medium term that production levels can be maintained at full capacity. The overhaul of design and production processes initiated in past years has contributed to the performance recorded on the latest ships delivered in 2021. Moreover, the benefits deriving from the important plan of investments in production and technology, now nearing completion, will become evident in the coming years. Finally, investment in human resources development continues through training and development programs aimed at ensuring the continuous improvement of technical-managerial skills and through a targeted recruitment policy. Combining these factors leads the company to believe that the impact on order margins deriving from the increase in raw material prices can be reabsorbed without significantly affecting the Group’s profitability.

TRIESTE – The extraordinary Commissioner for Venice cruises has published a notice for expressions of interest on the adaptation works of the Liguria and Lombardia quays in Marghera port to the cruise traffic.
The areas of intervention concern the two container terminals Vecon (Liguria quay) and TIV (Lombardia quay). In the first case, a maximum amount for the works of 1.35 million euros is estimated. In the second case, of 2.65 million euros.
The interventions are planned as part of the urgent measures for protecting waterways of cultural interest and the preservation of Venice, provided by the decree-law of July 2021 that prevented access to Venice to the “big ships”. A maximum of five temporary docking points in the Marghera area have been announced, also intended for passenger ships of 25,000 GT or more.
The works at the Vecon terminal will concern the Liguria quay and a stretch of state-owned road. This way, a temporary berth for cruise ships and a functional terminal for passenger flow management will be built.
Similarly, the Lombardia quay of the TIV terminal will see the construction of a new docking point and the creation of a passenger terminal.
The Extraordinary Commissioner (the Chairman of the Port Authority, Fulvio Lino Di Blasio) specifies that, for both the first and the second intervention, “… the time required to complete the works is set at 105 (one hundred and five) natural and consecutive days from the date of the urgent works delivery report to be signed at the same time as the final awarding”.
The question relating to the scheduling of mooring dates for the cruise season in 2022 remains on the table. The general manager of VTP Galliano Di Marco has recently expressed himself on the subject, while Vecon has given his willingness to find a solution that allows the two types of traffic to be integrated on the same quay.

KOPER – Dimitrij Zadel will no longer head the Board of directors of Luka Koper, starting November 15.
The decision results from an agreement between President Zadel himself and the Supervisory Board of the company that manages the port of Koper. Together with him, two other members of the board of directors will leave, pending the appointment of his replacement, whose choice has been entrusted to an external agency.
The decision taken at the end of October had already been hypothesized in recent months, as part of the decisions entrusted to politics. Luka Koper, it should be noted, is controlled by the Slovenian State (51.00 %) and the Slovenian Sovereign Wealth Fund (11.13 %) in addition to a small share held by the Municipality of Koper (3.14 %).
“The Supervisory Board estimates that the mentioned members of the Management Board performed their duties well, but due to conceptual differences in the further development strategy the company needs a new management.” This is the official explanation released for the shareholders.
The port of Koper, in continuous expansion, aims at confirming itself as a reference point for the Upper Adriatic Sea in evident competition with the port of Trieste. Luka Koper will probably exceed one million Teu handled at the end of the year, while it is confirmed as one of the top Mediterranean ports for car traffic.
The question mark remains about rail connections, a weak point in the future development of the port. The doubling works of the line towards Divaccia, however, should be able to remedy the situation. In the meantime, Luka Koper has announced a new truck terminal (after expanding the dedicated gates) and the possibility to quickly dispose of sludge obtained from dredging, thanks to the approval of the Maritime Space Plan, adopted after a 2014 EU directive. Late June, however, saw the announcement of the end of work on the south end of Pier I, which was extended by 100 meters.
Zadel, a mechanical engineer, had been appointed in late December 2017 to a five-year term. He had previously held top positions in Trgoavto d.o.o (responsible for commercial vehicle sales) and the OMV oil group: he was director of OMV Slovenija d.o.o accountable for the restructuring and reorganization of OMV subsidiaries in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy.

VENICE – After welcoming, last September 12, the first cruise on Venice landed in Marghera through Malamocco harbour entrance and the Canale dei Petroli, Vecon, one of the companies that manage the container terminals in the port of Venice, confirms its willingness to help solve the problem of cruises in the Lagoon.
Vecon is therefore willing to make available, from next spring, some of its docks on the mainland for the 2022 season of white ships in the Lagoon with greater tonnage, not able to be received at the Fusina port. The temporary solution is made necessary by the entry into force of Decree-Law 103, which prohibits the passage of large ships through the mouth of the Lido and then in basin San Marco and Giudecca channel to reach the Maritime Station.
The company points out that the operational modalities of possible use of the Vecon terminal are still under discussion in the negotiating table initiated with the Port Authority. Negotiations are open in all aspects: from quantifying the number of berths requested by cruise lines to the duration, annual or multi-year, of the agreement.
On the subject, in recent days, Galliano Di Marco, general manager of VTP (the company that manages the cruise port of call in the Lagoon), had sent a letter to shipping companies and shipping agencies regarding the requests for booking berths for the 2022 season received. In the letter, Di Marco underlines how there are no certainties either on the number of berths made available to cruise ships in the short-medium term or on the conditions of use.
In this sense, VTP has expressly requested to allow the use of the berths every day of the year and not only when there is no commercial traffic. The moorings available, admits Di Marco, will not be more than two or three units and, mainly, only on Saturdays and Sundays. The shipping companies were finally invited to confirm the 2022 programs in Venice by November 30.
Meanwhile, on the Vecon front, the ten-year process for the integration of the concession of the “Ex Cipi-Sartori” area, which began with a provisional formula in 2011, within the company’s main concession, was completed. This area accounts for approximately one-quarter of the total surface area used by the terminal. On this occasion, it was also recognized the right to abatement of the fee, with partial reversal, of the investments incurred by Vecon for the occupation and use of the compendium.
