Port of Trieste, in 2019 containers at 790,000 Teu

TRIESTE - In 2019 Trieste is confirmed as the first port of Italy with 62 million tonnes handled, to which are added the 4 million of the port of Monfalcone.

The year just ended marked two important milestones: container traffic with 789,594 teu (up 9% on 2018) and an historic record for the port, as well as the consolidation of rail traffic that is close to 10,000 trains with about 210,000 trucks taken off the road. In the railway sector, where from 2014 to the present has increased from 5,000 to 10,000 trains, new challenges are now opening up. In 2019 the construction sites in Campo Marzio (station in service of the harbour) had already started, but 2020 will be the year of the beginning of the most important works with investments that will reach a total of 200 million euros.
It should be noted that in the container sector, 56% of the traffic landed or boarded in Trieste in 2019, used the railway. This share is constantly growing and already exceeds the percentage that the EU has set as a target of European rail freight traffic for 2050 (which is 50%).
As regards each commodity sector, liquid bulk remain stable, reaching over 43 million tonnes handled (0.27%). Dry bulk sector grew by 3%, with 1.7 million tonnes handled. General cargo (-5%) are slowing down due to the negative result of the Ro-Ro sector (-24%) which went from 299,000 units transited in 2018 to 228,000 in 2019. This result led to a slight decrease (-1%) of the total port volumes from 62.6 million to 62 million tonnes.
