Port of Trieste, the Authority plans regional network. New trains record expected in 2018
TRIESTE – A logistics system which is able to link the production system of Friuli Venezia Giulia with the port of Trieste, the dry ports of Cervignano and Fernetti and the railway platform of Opicina
– this is the project that is being carried out by the President of the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, Zeno D'Agostino, to involve the whole economic system of Friuli Venezia Giulia in the development of the Port of Trieste.
After ranking first among the Italian ports by number of train handled in 2017 with 8681 convoys, it now points to a new record for 2018, expecting to exceed 10,000 units.
The Authority considers this as an opportunity for the regional productive system, especially after the phasing-in of the dry port of Cervignano, the development of the dry port of Fernetti (already in the service of the port of call) and the connections between Trieste and Opicina which will be handled by Adriafer, a railway company controlled by the Authority as well, from March.
In Cervignano, in particular, they want to create a hub for the arrival and the departure of goods, to be moved using the port of Trieste and a system of shuttles. This would allow the industrial and logistic system of Friuli to exploit the services of the port (both maritime and intermodal railway services) at lower costs than those offered today. A next step, as soon as they realize the rail links, will also involve the important industrial area of Pordenone.
