TRIESTE - 2017: Trieste leading Italian port for total cargo (+4.58% in tons), for train traffic with 8,681 trains (+13.76%) and first oil port of the Mediterranean. For the third year in a row the seaport of Trieste achieves a peak performance.
“The Port is again becoming the key of the economic development for Trieste, for the region Friuli Venezia Giulia, for our Country, as well as internationally” states President of Port Authority Mr. D’Agostino, after describing the data of the traffic in 2017 and the essential network of institutional and business relations built in the last years, not only with Europe, but also with Middle and Far East.
The total amount of freight moved by the Port (61,955,405 tons) shows an increase of 4.58% compared to 2016 and it is directly linked to the increase of the liquid bulk cargo, especially Siot oil (42.4 million of tons of crude oil).
2017 was a banner year for containers as well, reporting a total amount of 616,156 Teu (+26.66%). As for the railway traffic, it also played a prominent part – 8,681 trains, showing an increase of 13.76% on 2016 and of 45.17% on 2015. The presence of several railways companies (CFI and Inrail) and enterprises (Rail Cargo Carrier Italy, Rail traction Company, CapTrain Italia) held by leading European operators (Rail Cargo Austria, DB Schenker, SNCF) is strengthening the role of the Port of Trieste as a continental gateway for global traffic.
In 2017, miscellaneous goods proved to be another crucial factor with 16,565,255 tonnes (a growth rate of 14.11% on 2016). Moreover, Trieste is still the privileged gateway for Turkish traffic to Europe – the RO-RO sector is expanding as well with 302,516 vehicles (+4.28%).
