Intermodal Transport, Trieste enters the Adriatic-Baltic Corridor
TRIESTE - The first train to undergo the long distance journey with a direct line to Kiel-Göteborg has departed recently from the Port of Trieste.
The new service has been promoted by the logistical operator EKOL (EMT partner), and is the first operating railway connection along the TEN-T Adriatic-Baltic corridor. «This project is of great value, because it expands the range of action of Trieste’s Port towards Scandinavian countries as well as opportunities with Russia, Turkey (already well consolidated with the port of call) and Iran. The new connection confirms the great dedication of Trieste to railroads, which is important as well for the entire Italian port system», said the president of the Port Authority, Zeno D’Agostino. The new connection falls in the context of growth development of Trieste’s port which has seen values increase 68% in railroad traffic in the past two years (+27% in 2015 only) for a total of 7,600 trains moved last year.
