Trieste, the Port strengthens the railway: Transalpina line reactivated
TRIESTE - New upgrade of the railway system serving the Port of Trieste. The Transalpina, a track connecting the stations of Villa Opicina and Trieste Campo Marzio (main station of the Port) just saw the first trains running its path again.
The 14 km route, with a maximum slope of 25/1000, reactivates an old Habsburg line to provide an alternative path to the existing sections that runs underground section and then along the coast to connect the harbour with the international rail network. This is a new step that follows other investments for the development and efficiency of existing infrastructures. Adriafer, a company controlled by the Port Authority, will carry out the traction service for freight trains on that route. The company has in fact obtained from RFI (the Company managing the Italian railway network) the authorization to transport cargo convoys, for 40 feet High Cube (HC) containers, putting into service two locomotives: Siemens E191 electric and Vossloh D 100 diesel. Two services have already been performed in the last few weeks, last week's train consisting of 20 wagons and a load of 48 containers bound for Molo VII, coming from Dunajska Streda, Slovakia.
«Another important project for the restoration of lines is underway» pointed out the President of the Port System Authority, Zeno D'Agostino, «which the railway history of Trieste had left us and which RFI has implemented, to allow operation of freight trains connecting the logistics system of the Port of Trieste, in particular with the Interport of Fernetti».
