Port of Trieste: Region and Authority examine “tax free zone”

TRIESTE - The idea to institute a “tax free zone”, was the main subject at today’s meeting between the Friuli Venezia Giulia's regional financial councelor, Francesco Peroni and Trieste’s Port Authority Commissioner Zeno D’Agostino.

The meeting was held following a letter written by Friuli Venezia Giulia’s president, Debora Serracchiani, to Italy’s Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi on June 30th, after the referendum which initiated the procedure of  Britain’s exit from the European Union.
The Region is evaluating together with Trieste’s Port Authority the opportunity of a convergence between the present customs system and a new fiscally advantageous zone that would be of particular interest for both the Region and Port authority in the Friuli Venezia Giulia territory.
For Commissioner D’Agostino the fiscal advantages together with the peculiarities of Trieste’s International Port, ”would be the perfect completion of our desire to compete in the international market”. The proposal however, must take into account the respective responsibilities of the European Community and the Italian Republic.  For these reasons Mr. Peroni has underlined how the supervision of the industrial policy, under which tax rules are closely interconnected, is dependent on the Regional administration.
