Port of Trieste, new record: +18% in Teu, +12% in trains

TRIESTE - The ports of Trieste and Monfalcone, managed by a single Authority, established in 2018 the record of goods moved in Italy with 67 million tons: 62.7 million in Trieste and 4.5 in Monfalcone.

The best performance was registered by the container sector, closing the year with 725,500 TEU – an increase of 18% on 2017 (+49% on 2016). Moreover, Trieste confirms itself as the first railway port of Italy, since last year ended up touching the figure of 10,000 trains (+12% on the 2017), with a growth forecast of 10% in 2019. In this sector, the Port Network Authority focused on environmental sustainability: the trains moved in 2018 made it possible to remove about 210,000 trucks from the roads.
«Trains are the undisputed leaders of our growth -said the president of the Authority, Zeno D'Agostino - and the figures registered by the port of Trieste confirm the choice made in favor of investments in the railway infrastructure, amounting to 120 million euros in total». Encouraging figures were recorded for general goods, with an increase of 7.30% and 1.6% in solid bulk cargo. A slight decline, however, was marked in liquid bulk cargo (-1%) and Ro-ro, with 299,400 transited units (-1%), also due – in the latter case – to the collapse of the Turkish Lira and the consequent drop in exports from Istanbul.
