Port of Trieste, in 2019 containers at 790,000 Teu

TRIESTE - In 2019 Trieste is confirmed as the first port of Italy with 62 million tons handled, adding to which are the 4 million of the port of Monfalcone.

The year just ended marked two important milestones: container traffic with 789,594 teu (+9% on 2018), an historic record for the port, and the consolidation of rail traffic that is close to 10,000 trains, with about 210,000 trucks taken off the road. In the railway sector, where in the period 2014 - 2019 the train number has increased from 5,000 to 10,000, new challenges are now opening up. Construction sites have already been opened up in 2019 in Campo Marzio (station in service of the harbour), but 2020 will see the beginning of the most important works, with investments that will reach a total of 200 million euros.
It should be noted that in the container sector, 56% of the traffic landed or boarded in Trieste in 2019, used the railway. This share is constantly growing and already exceeds the percentage that the EU has set as a target for European rail freight traffic by 2050, i.e. 50%.
As regards other commodities, liquid bulk remain stable, reaching over 43 million tons handled (+0.27%). Dry bulk sector grew by 3%, with 1.7 million tons handled. General cargo (-5%) is slowing down due to the negative result of the Ro-Ro sector (-24%) which passed from the 299,000 units of 2018 to the 228,000 of 2019. This result led to a slight decrease (-1%) of the total port volumes, from 62.6 million to 62 million tons.
